TALENT is but a SEED

May 16, 2023 | Inspirational

I have often heard people remark as they look upon student artwork; “They are so talented!” as if it was some magical ingredient. I believe that there’s nothing ‘magical’ about it- but the idea of talent is certainly a more captivating concept.

Learning to draw is no different than learning how to play the piano. There are plenty of ‘failed’ pianists; young people who were made to play, but had no interest in it. That’s the key- finding an interest.

I maintain that ‘talent is but a seed’: a beginning of something promising- but that ‘seed’ needs to be nurtured in order to grow and thrive.

So have a look at this image here.  I created this self-portrait on my first day in kindergarten. My arms are coming out of my bean body like sticks you would put on a snowman. I have no hands! ( *clearly these were too difficult-) I think I tried to draw one foot pointing outwards..

On that first day of school, my work was not remarkable for a little kid.

So if the creative ‘magic’ isn’t sprinkled then, when is the imagination sparked?

For me it was a visit to the public library when I was about 8 years old. I discovered the shelf with cartooning books, a number of them were of the ‘how to-‘ kind. How tantalizing! It clicked with me! The perverbial cartoon “lightbulb” went off in my head! My career path was set!

It is the simple and unremarkable application of practice that makes the difference. Just like piano practice, you learn by doing and making mistakes is an integral part of the process. That is your journey and your quest.

Look for constructive feedback and it will likely help you to improve. There are no shortcuts, it simply takes time. If you love drawing, that love will sustain you through those many hours and years, like a long and happy marriage.

This is my interpretation.
